Caravaggio Inspired Family Portrait Masterpiece Photo

This set is almost a duplicate of the set from Caravaggio’s The Calling of Saint Matthew – there is almost the same light source coming through the window. Caravaggio did tight pools of light. In fact, a lot of cinema we see today mimics his lighting style.

This group portrait is a family that our family has known for many years. The dad who is missing here had died just recently, and I was trying to do something to honor my love and friendship with my deceased friend. We had worked together for maybe 20 or 30 years, and I knew the qualities of each person in his family. So I started by doing a sketch - putting them in and then deciding who would be in what place and working out all my triangles for good composition, indeed making the eye flow.

One of my personal challenges with my new voice is that sometimes I can't control its tone-- how it sounds. Even when I want to come across as sweet, my voice can come out crackly or crisp, so I wanted to challenge myself to see if I could art direct a large group and get everybody to do everything at one time in a single shoot with a single click.

This photograph scored 100 at the Society of Wedding & Portrait Photographers (SWPP) print competition in January 2016 winning the overall highest scoring print award as well as Best Classic Portrait and Best Portrait Overall.
