Jane Austen Photo Tribute To Regency Period Women

As a photo tribute to the women of the 1795-1820's Regency Period, I created this portrait of the beautiful Kaitlyn York inspired by Jane Austen

1820's fashion marked a shift away from the classic empire waist of the previous 25 years and returned to the "natural waist". In this particular portrait, I wanted to showcase the Empire style as It was very much in line with the styles of Jane Austen's time.

Jane Austen's Influence On Fashion

Jane Austen is well-regarded for her literary works Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Persuasion, and Northanger Abbey. Her novels are a tremendous inspiration to my daughters as they searched for their very own "Mr. Darcy's." Her work reflected the shift in thinking occurring at this time regarding how women expressed themselves and were perceived.

During this period, women were changing their social and philosophical ideals. This natural style of clothing allowed women to express not only who they were internally but externally as well. The use of accessories and detail within and on the clothing was a big part of this self-expression.

Clothing became lighter and more comfortable for women to wear during this movement to a natural style. Previously, women were more confined due to long trains and hoop skirts that restricted them. Fashion magazines first appeared as both gentlemen and ladies wanted to stay current with the modern styles.

Underpinning much of this influence was the Industrial Revolution occurring during this time. Clothing and fashion for the first time were being mass produced and changed at a faster frequency. In fact, in 1790, the sewing machine was introduced and by 1804 the first embroidering machine. With the new ease of travel, both fashion and other influences could spread across the globe, rapidly changing societies across Europe and the USA.

What I love about this portrait, is the sense of elegance and simplicity that highlights Kaitlyn's natural beauty.
