As a Wedding Photographer, there are basically two different ways to approach a wedding or event. One is in a traditional portrait manner in which you control the event, the people, the poses, the lighting etc. as you concept and create perfect formal images. A Wedding Photojournalist documents life as it happens, in all its lovely imperfection in a straight forward candid style. Which one is right for you? That completely depends on you and your fiancee's personality and how much you want your wedding day to be controlled by your photographer. The best part is there is no wrong answer.
Here's some side by side comparison highlights.
As Wedding Photojournalists, what's our wedding day approach?
First, we try and learn a little about you. It's our belief that your Wedding Day is a sacred event between you and your fiancee. Most importantly, 21st century weddings have changed a bit since your Parents and Grandparents were married. As Photographers, we don't want to direct your wedding day like a Circus Ring Master. It's important to us not to overshadow the precious moments you are sharing with your sweetheart, family and friends. But we are aware that sometimes the photos that are most meaningful to your Grandparents are the one with everyone in a line smiling for the camera. So we typically blend the styles about 90% Wedding Photojournalism and 10% Traditional. But we are completely flexible if you decide that you prefer more of one or the other.
Working with a Wedding Photojournalist on your Wedding Day.
The best shots occur when you are no longer conscious of the camera. That doesn't mean your Photographer is becomes invisible, just that you are interacting with those around you in a natural manner laughing, crying, and being yourselves. There will be times that you want a picture taken with someone in a more candid pose manner like when your favorite Aunt from out of town comes in to see you getting dressed, or your best friend stops you outside the church and gives you a hug.
Relationships are so important to us, and when that happens just let us know and of course we will make sure to get those shots as well. It's all part of your wedding day narrative. We like to arrive in the Bridal Suite once she is appropriate for a PG rated shot. If you wait until Grandma says she's dressed, you'll miss some of the most spectacular moments of the day.
How do locations affect my pictures?
Shooting outdoors brings nature out nature's beauty. It also brings out nature's elements. A gently blowing breeze that catches your veil makes wedding photojournalists smile enormously. But it can also mess up your hair that you have spent countless time and resources getting it perfect. The best balance is in knowing the personalities of the subjects you are shooting.
If you are up to it, the results can be amazing. But if it is going to give you one more thing to worry about on your wedding day, it's not be worth the risk. Indoors at night can also create some magical photo opportunities. But in low light, it can be hard to focus, or completely stop motion blur. We talk to you about the when and the where ahead of time and match just how adventurous your personality is before we ever take you to a location that is out of our control. It's part of being flexible.
